The story

It is the first week of January 1812. Mr. Bingley is gone, Jane Bennet’s hopes are gone with him, and all Meryton knows how Mr. Darcy treated poor Mr. Wickham. Then a chaise turns in at Lucas Lodge. Mr. Darcy has come, at his aunt’s command, to see Mr. Collins married and to report on the bride’s family, and Sir William Lucas will not hear of the inn.

For six days he is Sir William’s guest of honour, a short walk from Longbourn. There are banns to hear and shelves to be discussed. There is a Twelfth Night party, where a boy of eleven is King and a man who has never been laughed at must play the beau. And there are Lady Catherine’s letters, which Mr. Collins reads aloud.

Elizabeth Bennet means to be entertained. She does not mean to be wrong. By Easter he is at Rosings and she is at the parsonage across the park, with a debt she has not been allowed to pay.

Lady Catherine’s Wedding Guest is a witty, clean, low-angst Pride and Prejudice variation novella of about 26,000 words (an afternoon’s read), set at Twelfth Night and Easter: a complete standalone, with a happy ending for Darcy and Elizabeth.
